Welcome to life in Aba, Nigeria!!! Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie who happens to be a personality I look up to, in a lecture she gave a while ago adressed the dangers of a single story. Aba, Nigeria has, for a long time, being a victim of a single story, a not very flattering one. While I have being aware of this story for a long time, it wasn't until I went to the university and met other people from different parts of the country did I realize how stupid this story is. This story that has so painted Aba and it's inhabitants black. In the bible this question was asked 'Can anything good come out of Nazareth?' and today many Nigerians will ask 'Can anything good come out of Aba?' Many will without hesitation answer the question with a resounding No and most of them haven't even smelt Aba before nor have they seen it. In school, most Aba citizens (umuaba) have already stopped identifying with the city as umuaba are generally regarded as mannerless, uncultured, brazen and crude. That is why I created this blog, to write another story, an alternative to the single one that has been told over the years. Aba is definitely no Paris but it is home to a million hardworking, streetwise people, and even though the roads are bad and we are drowning in filth, we are proud and happy to live in this greatly misunderstood city. Yes, this blog is to tell the untold stories of the second largest market city east of the Niger, this blog will make every Aba citizen proud. After all, something good did come out of Nazareth, Jesus. Once again, welcome!
